The New Extension of the Serralves Museum, inaugurated at the end of 2023 and known as the Álvaro Siza Wing, is a landmark in the history of the institution and Portuguese architecture. Designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira and presented by architect Maria Moura and engineer Jorge Silva, the building increases the museum’s exhibition space by 40 to 44%, with three floors: two dedicated to showcasing Serralves’ contemporary collection and architecture, and one for archives and storage, which expanded by 75%.
Located in a protected clearing within Serralves Park, the building was carefully adapted to the terrain and existing vegetation, contorting itself to preserve and respect the protected species. Highlights include its green roof, organic integration with the park, and the elevated gallery (“bridge”) connecting it to the existing museum, creating a network of cultural hubs within Serralves.
The Álvaro Siza Wing was designed to enable permanent, yet dynamic, displays of contemporary works and architecture, reinforcing the Foundation’s mission of elevating architecture not only through curatorship but also construction. It is a thoughtful response to the need for space, given the growth in collections and activities over the years. The building is now a benchmark of beauty, functionality, and respect for nature, encapsulating Siza Vieira’s philosophy.
