The Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S) at the University of Porto was designed to integrate functionality and strengthen the existing urban fabric through a compact volume tailored to the requirements of research laboratories. The building, consisting of three above-ground floors and one basement, is organised into two main blocks: the common services and public areas block grounded by a garden, and the laboratory blocks, punctuated by patios allowing natural light.
This institute consolidates three scientific centres – the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMC), the National Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB), and the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology (IPATIMUP). Regarded as Portugal's largest health sciences research institute, i3S is distinguished by its bold and functional architecture designed to support high-intensity scientific activity.
The architectural project focuses on functional efficiency, environmental quality, and connection to nature, providing specialised spaces along with common and technical areas. Advanced construction solutions ensure moisture control and waterproofing in the basement housing the bioterium. i3S stands as a landmark facility within the University of Porto, positioning it at the forefront of international biomedical research.
