This second edition focuses on the construction of the Douro Breakwaters, a monumental project that stretches into the sea, confronting natural forces and extending the city right up to the water’s edge. Building a vast seawall at the meeting point of the river and ocean is, more than anything, a challenge to nature itself—an attempt to create a truly urban and inviting space over the water.

In this particular undertaking, led by Engineer Silveira Ramos and Architect Carlos Prata, the aim was to combine technical robustness with environmental sensitivity, resulting in a new public walkway by the sea and the North Breakwater Lighthouse, resembling the prow of a ship. The project’s complexity demanded thoughtful adaptation of heights and structures, which led to the creation of galleries and open spaces overlooking the ocean, where visitors can witness both its calm and its tempestuous moods.

The Douro Navigability Institute set out clear objectives: stabilising the estuary banks, improving safety and navigation at the river mouth, and preserving both the natural scenery and urban landscape. The chosen solution combined pioneering engineering methods with a strong commitment to urban and environmental enhancement, establishing the Breakwaters as a multidisciplinary team achievement and a landmark for Porto’s maritime front.
