Conversion and exploitation of the former Porto Industrial Slaughterhouse

The redevelopment project of the "Old Industrial Slaughterhouse of Porto", located on Rua São Roque da Lameira in Campanhã, aims to transform this significant complex into a business, cultural, and social hub designed to host over 2,300 people. After being abandoned for nearly 20 years and suffering severe degradation, the site has undergone extensive rehabilitation, preserving its historical memory and original architecture while adapting to new uses.

The programme includes refurbishing 11 buildings to house business, commercial, cultural, and leisure spaces, with areas dedicated to exhibitions, artistic production, and community activities. A large modern metal canopy creates visual unity between the old and new structures. A new north building links the complex to the Dragão metro station via an elevated walkway crossing the VCI, enhancing pedestrian and bicycle connectivity between previously fragmented parts of the city.

The redevelopment uses local and sustainable materials and incorporates technological solutions for energy efficiency, photovoltaic solar generation, and construction monitoring to ensure structural safety. The project marks a milestone in the urban regeneration of Porto’s eastern zone, fostering social cohesion, economic dynamism, and cultural enrichment.
