The São João National Theatre, located in the heart of Porto, is one of the city’s most important and historic cultural buildings. Originally inaugurated in 1798 as the Royal Theatre of São João, the venue has undergone several reconstructions over the centuries, most notably the current structure designed by José Marques da Silva after a fire in 1908. With its imposing neoclassical façade and richly decorated interiors, the theatre is a true icon of Portuguese architecture and the performing arts.

Today, the São João Theatre remains one of the main stages for theatre, opera, and other performances of national and international renown. The venue hosts both contemporary and classical productions, contributing to the cultural dynamism of Porto and the entire Northern region. In addition to its performances, the theatre is also a tourist destination, allowing visitors to discover its history and behind-the-scenes areas through guided tours, which reveal the grandeur and secrets of this living monument of the city.
