In the 14th edition of Sebentas d’Obra, we delve into the civil engineering discipline of water supply, a crucial infrastructure for public health and the urban development of major cities. In Porto, water supply dates back to the 14th century, with the completion of canalisation for public fountains in the 17th century. The transport for household distribution only began at the end of the 19th century, accompanied by the construction of key reservoirs ensuring system functionality even during flood periods.

Between 1885 and 1887, a network exceeding 70 km of pipes was established, including the reservoirs of Santo Isidro, Congregados, and São João da Foz (Pasteleira), the latter supplying water to the city’s western zone. Towards the end of the 20th century, after modernisation, these reservoirs were decommissioned and remained so until recently.

Recognising their heritage value, Águas do Porto launched a design competition for the enhancement and public opening of these spaces. Atelier 15, led by architects Alexandre Alves Costa and Sérgio Fernandez, developed the winning proposal, starting with intervention in the Pasteleira Reservoir. Supported by Eng. António Alpuim, the team carried out a near-surgical operation, introducing natural light to this vast cistern by cutting through the outer slope and piercing the roof with skylights, accessible via discreet park stairs, revealing a previously hidden heritage to the city.
