The Sobreiras Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), located in the parish of Lordelo do Ouro, is one of two such facilities serving Porto. Commissioned in 2003, it occupies 1.6 hectares in a densely populated residential area and was designed to serve an equivalent population of 200,000 inhabitants, treating an average daily flow of about 54,000 cubic metres.
The compact plant is arranged across multiple levels, with its key treatment units organized into three distinct blocks to optimise wastewater processing. Block A comprises two stacked reservoir floors, covering 61x63 m² with a height of 15 metres, while Block B measures 27x45 m² with a height of 20 metres and houses seven levels with various functions.
The treatment process includes three main lines: the liquid line consisting of screening, grit removal, degreasing, primary lamellar settling, activated sludge biological treatment, tertiary sand filtration, and ultraviolet disinfection; the sludge treatment line; and the deodorisation line, employing technology to treat odorous air and eliminate smells.
Due to space constraints, the plant is partially buried, featuring green roofs and landscaped surroundings to minimise visual and environmental impacts.
