The new bridge over the Douro River, part of the forthcoming Metro do Porto’s Linha Rubi, will connect Campo Alegre in Porto to Candal in Vila Nova de Gaia, marking the seventh crossing between the two cities. Discussed in the Inovação Fora de Portas – Engenharia Civil à Mostra initiative, the project, developed by architects José Carlos Nunes, Eng. Miguel Sacristán Montesinos, and Eng. Filipe Vasques, highlights technical challenges and solutions to integrate the infrastructure into the densely urbanised area while minimising environmental and urban impacts.
The bridge will be approximately 835 metres long, divided into 8 spans, with a main span of 428 metres, rising higher than the Ponte da Arrábida to avoid visual obstruction. Situated upstream of the Ponte da Arrábida, this crossing promotes sustainable urban mobility and strengthens the connection between Porto and Gaia, creating new urban spaces and consolidating metropolitan development.
Scheduled for completion by the end of 2026 and largely financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), this structure will herald a new era in mobility and urban infrastructure for the region.
