In the eleventh edition of Sebentas d’Obra, we revisit the intervention on the Luiz I Bridge to accommodate the Porto Metro, focusing on rehabilitation and maintenance from the viewpoint of Eng. Victor Silva at Metro do Porto and the monitoring process led by Eng. Joaquim Figueiras of FEUP. The initial diagnostic study presented in the sixth edition set out guidelines to ensure that vibrations caused by the consistent speed of Metro carriages do not compromise the structure.

The project, carried out by Metro do Porto, involved measures to secure the bridge's long-term efficacy without significantly altering its original configuration. Today, the intervention areas are visually indistinguishable. Monitoring led by Joaquim Figueiras has shown that vibrations caused by events such as the Half Marathon or crowds during São João celebrations do not affect the bridge’s structural performance, demonstrating the effectiveness of the work.

Maintenance and monitoring of civil engineering masterpieces are now critical tasks akin to overseeing a large machine, ensuring safety and functionality for the thousands of daily users. These measures guarantee that urban infrastructures are preserved responsibly, safeguarding the lives of those who rely on them.
