The Bairro de Lordelo, located in the Union of Parishes of Lordelo do Ouro and Massarelos, was built in 1977 and rehabilitated in 2011 as part of the “Inovação Fora de Portas – Civil Engineering on Show” initiative. Prior to rehabilitation, the buildings suffered various pathologies and had a heavily degraded visual identity due to multiple partial interventions that resulted in aesthetic and functional heterogeneity.
The rehabilitation addressed these issues by balancing often competing demands such as hygrothermal comfort, energy conservation, durability and functionality. The project aimed to restore the constructural coherence of the buildings and to adapt the constructions to current standards and regulations, always favouring the use of materials in their natural expression, consistent with the original solutions.
Beyond the buildings, the intervention considered climatic and cultural challenges, financial constraints and the need to meet future expectations of occupants, focusing on the building’s overall performance and inhabitants’ comfort. Controlled ventilation, improved thermal inertia, solar protection and night-time ventilation are key elements aimed at reducing discomfort, preventing condensation, and ensuring good indoor air quality.
