The Mercado do Bolhão is a treasured landmark of Porto, officially classified as a “monument of public interest” under Ordinance 613/2013 of 20 September. The building stands as a prime example of the Beaux Arts eclectic style in Portugal and preserves the vibrant tradition of markets and fresh produce commerce, a core element of Porto’s identity.

Constructed in 1914 based on a design by architect Correia da Silva, the Bolhão underwent several modifications throughout the 20th century, including an intermediate floor addition in the 1940s and changes to adapt to urban developments. In the 1990s, an international rehabilitation competition was held, resulting in a unanimously approved project by architect Joaquim Massena, endorsed by Porto City Council.

Between 2018 and 2022, the market underwent a comprehensive restoration and modernisation, commissioned to the Alberto Couto Alves S.A. and Lúcio da Silva Azevedo & Filhos S.A. group, funded by public and community sources. It reopened to the public on 15 September 2022 featuring over 70 traders, 38 outdoor shops and 10 restaurants, continuing its lively role as a fresh food market while incorporating museological facilities and auditoriums.
