The Palácio do Conde do Bolhão, a historic landmark in the city of Porto, underwent a meticulous nine-year rehabilitation process, culminating in its reopening in 2016.

This magnificent building, dating back to 1844, was originally conceived as a true architectural jewel, reflecting the grandeur of the period in which it was built.

Now home to the Teatro do Bolhão, the palace has been transformed through an ambitious vision into a vibrant hub for art and culture—offering the city a dedicated space where theatre and the performing arts can thrive.

The technical team responsible for the project will share insights into how the rehabilitation unfolded, presenting the challenges encountered during the restoration, the design decisions taken to preserve the historical integrity of the building, and the innovations introduced to ensure the space is fully functional and accessible to a contemporary audience.

The reopening of the Palácio do Conde do Bolhão has not only revitalised a significant part of Porto’s cultural heritage but has also created a space where creativity and artistic expression can flourish. Through this project, past and present are interwoven—breathing new life into a place that holds so many stories.
